Planet of the Apes is a science fiction film series based on the 1963 book by Pierre Boulle. The first film in the series, Planet of the Apes, was released in 1968 and starred Charlton Heston and Roddy McDowall. The movie was a commercial success and was followed by four sequels, ending with Battle for the Planet of the Apes in 1973.

Planet of the Apes (2001)

The franchise was rebooted in 2001 with a Planet of the Apes movie directed by Tim Burton and starring Mark Wahlberg, Tim Roth, Helena Bonham Carter, and Michael Clarke Duncan. The film did well at the box office, earning more than $350 million on a $100 budget but 20th Century Fox opted to forgo creating a sequel.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011)

The Planet of the Apes franchise was rebooted in 2011 with new stand-alone movie.
Rise of the Planet of the Apes is a science fiction film that features James Franco, Freida Pinto, and Andy Serkis. The movie was released in August 2011 and grossed over $400 million.
The movie is not a remake or sequel to any previous Planet of the Apes movies; it is intended to be an origin story for a new trilogy of films.
Note: Important subtitles are used briefly during the middle of the movie.

Rating: PG-13 for intense and frightening sequences of action and violence.

Length: 1 hour 34 minutes.


Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014)

A sequel to Rise, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, was released on July 11, 2014 and earned over $700 million. It stars Andy Serkis, Jason Clarke, Gary Oldman, and Keri Russell.
The sequel picks up ten years after the original movie.
The first movie should be seen before watching the second movie as events and characters from the first are seen and referenced in the second.

Rating: PG-13 for intense sequences of sci-fi violence and action, and brief strong language.

Length: 2 hours 10 minutes.


War for the Planet of the Apes (2017)

The third movie, War for the Planet of the Apes, was released in the United States on July 14, 2017. The film earned more than $480 million on a budget of $150 million.
This film takes place two years after Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.
The first two movies should be seen before watching the third movie as events and characters from the previous films are seen and referenced in the last.
Note: Important subtitles are used throughout the movie.

Rating: PG-13 for sequences of sci-fi violence and action, thematic elements, and some disturbing images.

Length: 2 hours 20 minutes.


Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (2024)

A fourth movie, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, was released in the United States on May 10, 2024. The film earned almost $400 million on a budget of $160 million.
The fourth film takes place 300 years after War for the Planet of the Apes.

Rating: Rated PG-13 for intense sequences of sci-fi violence/action.

Length: 2 hours 25 minutes.
