The film was a commercial success and earned $170 million on a budget of $25 million. The movie was released to theaters in North America in January 2008 and to DVD and Blu-ray on April 22, 2008.

10 Cloverfield Lane is a psychological thriller set in the same universe as Cloverfield and was released in 2016. This film revolves around different characters than the first film. It was released in the United States in March 2016 and to DVD and Blu-ray in June of the same year. The film earned $110 million worldwide on a budget of $15 million.
10 Cloverfield Lane is independent of the first film and can be enjoyed without seeing Cloverfield.
A third film set in the same universe, The Cloverfield Paradox, was released to Netflix
in February 2018 immediatley following the Super Bowl telecast.
The third movie stars Daniel Brühl, Elizabeth Debicki, Aksel Hennie, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Chris O'Dowd, John Ortiz, David Oyelowo, and Zhang Ziyi.
